Cloud Station is a bit of a misnomer in the sense that it really isn't a true cloud service. We're partial to Synology devices here because of the sophistication of its software, and the company has been offering a service called Cloud Station. Hence, the free Dropbox app is one of the leading cloud storage methods, which is used by many people all around the world. But dropbox online offered only 2GB of free storage and there were some syncing issues. Are there better options? Currently, all the major networked storage (NAS) vendors offer some form of "personal cloud" service, one that lets you store your files on your hardware and then work with them seamlessly from anywhere. Will the mac client be updated to support this update in the protocol on our. Dropbox Client Problems Download The FileThis provides redundancy both on the storage level—if any one disk fails, the scattered bits of your file will always be able to rebuild the whole. Although this is labeled a cloud service, a cloud is technically an amorphous pool of storage devices where files may be split up and have pieces stored in multiple locations. Download pre-compiled binaries for Mac, Windows and Linux from the releases page.On the client side, files are stored locally, and any changes are synched back to the remote copy. Once you set it up on one of the company's NAS boxes, any computer running the client software can connect.A command line client for Dropbox built using the Go SDK - GitHub. You can still work on the local one, but if you don't have a copy of the file you need locally, you're out of luck. If there's any other problem with the hardware or your network, your server-side copy is offline. (Of course, it also lets you turn that redundancy off if you're so inclined.) That's where the redundancy ends. Even if an entire facility is offline, there's a chance that your file's bits will all be somewhere else.Cloud Station offers redundancy to the degree that all but its lowest-end offerings provide RAID options that will keep your data intact if a single disk fails. The good news is that there are ways to recover files that have otherwise been trashed.Introducing the problems up front may sound like we're down on the service, but that's not the case. We'll get in to a potentially destructive chain of events below. If two people are editing the same document at the same time, and one of them saves, there could be problems. You can still get a user behaving destructively, but the cloud service does its best to avoid unintentional destruction. With Synology, well. If you edit a Google doc, the server lets multiple users edit the same document at once each user's changes occur roughly as they're made. Synology has started moving away from a monolithic collection of control panels optional installations like Cloud Station get a separate configuration application that can be launched from the rough equivalent of a Start Button in their browser-based configuration application. But that's only getting started. Server sideHow does this all work? On the NAS side, getting started is as easy as downloading and installing an app with one click in the GUI interface. Just think of this as bad news first on to the good news. Each piece of Synology hardware generates a unique code and reports that in to a server at the company. AdvertisementEnlarge / Getting your client software to talk to your NAS can be as simple as entering a QuickConnect ID.Another option is what Synology calls QuickConnect. This could potentially be an incredibly convenient means of keeping an iTunes library synched across multiple computers, but we've not tested that. There's also the option of sharing some of the default media folders, such as the one for music. By default, a "Cloud Station" folder will be created in the home folder of any users that are enabled. You have to enable the service, enable individual users, and determine which folders will end up being synched. To have access when you're on the road or to allow someone at a remote location access, you need to make sure your router forwards the ports that it uses to the right device. If you plug that code into Synology's client software, it'll find your machine.Typically, if you don't do anything else, any of these methods will work just fine within your home network. Alternately, you can try to claim an easy-to-remember name like ArsTestingBox. You can also tell it to always use SSL connections for added security. With that you should be set to connect. Once installed, you tell the software your server's QuickConnect ID, hostname, or IP address, as well as the username and password for your account on it. First contactThe client software (versions for Mac and Windows exist) is a separate download and install from Synology's website. And that's just on the server. None of these individual steps are especially complicated (although results may vary depending on your router's firmware), but you have to successfully complete all of them before you have full access to the promise of Cloud Station. Simply tell it what kind of router you have, and it will connect to it and open ports for every service you have enabled. If your router's not supported or you want finer-grained control (for example, if you have ports that redirect to a different machine), then you'll have to configure port forwarding manually. Omnifocus with outlook for macIt stays in touch with the server and copies over any newly added or modified files. Any files you've placed in the folder (either on the server or by synching another machine) will start appearing in your designated folders to (on the Mac at least) a chorus of Growl notifications.Enlarge / Synology's client software gives you fine-grained control over which folders, and what file types within them, get synched back to the NAS.From there on, the client software does two things. Those days seem to have passed, though the last time I updated our server software, the client software recognized it was out of date and updated itself.Once you're connected, the client software creates a "Cloud Station" directory in your home folder and gets in touch with the server. Synology would also sporadically release server software and a compatible Windows client but leave a lag before the Mac version got released. If they weren't, you used to get a completely uninformative error message. If they can't be synched, then a red badge appears. Files that aren't in synch get a blue badge on their icons as they get brought over to the server, the badge turns to green. In about two years of use, I've not had a single significant problem. On the Mac, the client software integrates with the Finder. I've kept three machines (a desktop, my main work laptop, and an ultraportable) happily synched up with the same folder. And as you make these changes, any other machines you've got on the same account will be grabbing the files as well. ![]() In the same way, any changes that you save will also propagate nearly instantly. But it will completely vanish from every other machine that's connected at the time, and it will do so in a matter of seconds. Delete the file from one machine, and it will still be available from the trash on that machine. Most other applications will simply let you save right back over any changes without so much as a hint there might be a problem. BBEdit gracefully detects when a document it has open changes on disk and offers you options for how to deal with it. How will an application respond? It all depends on the application. (You'll see more Growl notifications pop up regularly as you work in one of these apps). It's also possible to have an application on one machine write changes to a file that's open in an application on another (again, Lion and up make this even easier to do).
